Vehicle sellers bear brunt of fines
Hyderabad: Not updating records of vehicle ownership transfers with the Road Transport Authority (RTA) has become a major reason for traffic penalties piling up (unpaid) and the original owners facing the wrath of the traffic department.
When a vehicle is sold, it is mandatory for the buyer to register details with the RTA and get the registration certificate. If this is not done, the original owner still holds the ownership and is also responsible for the buyer’s violations. In most cases of signal jumping, wrong parking, speeding violations, notices go to the original owner though the vehicle is already sold. If such vehicles are used in thefts or terror attacks, the original owner is held responsible, say officials.
South Zone DCP A.V. Ranganath said, “Over 6-7 lakh vehicles are plying on Hyderabad roads without ownership documents, especially two-wheelers.
In most cases, whenever the original owner sells the vehicle, it does not reflect in RTA records. With this, the whole system of e-challans is collapsing. While issuing e- challans, the address needs to be accurate. When there is no address, there is no value of the challans and the violator escapes.”
In order to ensure that all commuters hold ownership documents, the Traffic department has started a drive at the RTA office, where applicants can apply for ownership transfers.
“The drive began on October 10 initially, over 200 – 300 applicants applied, but currently over 600 application are received daily,” said Road Transport Authority officials.
