Search panel to decide on Calicut University vice-chancellor today
KOZHIKODE: As the Search Committee meeting for the Calicut University vice-chancellor will be held on Tuesday, the Muslim League leadership has not yet finalised its nominee. The meeting would be the final one in which the three-member committee is expected to recommend either a unanimous name or a panel of names to the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the university.
It is learnt that the selection committee, comprising chief secretary Jiji Thomson (government representative), K. K. Syed Abid Hussain Thangal and Central University of Gujarat vice-chancellor Prof S. A. Bari, has already received nearly 90 applications for the VC's post at the state's largest university.
This would also be the first VC selection in the state based on the UGC-stipulated norms.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, chief secretary Jiji Thomson and the Raj Bhavan sources confirmed that the meeting on Tuesday would finalise the name or panel to be submitted to the Governor who will take a final call.
It was on July 27 that Governor P. Sathasivam constituted the Search Committee for a period of three months for the VC selection. Though the committee met on September 15, they couldn't finalise the names for the post.
After the expiration of term, the chief secretary requested for one month extension which was granted by the Governor.
Two of the prominent names the Muslim League is actively considering for the post are of former KSHEC member secretary Dr P. Anwar and Kerala University registrar Dr K. Mohammed Basheer.
Speaking to DC, Muslim League leader and syndicate member Dr V. P. Abdul Hameed said the leadership has not yet reached a consensus on the nominees. "The Senate representative will hold discussions with League leaders in Thiruvananthapuram and by noon, I hope we can finalise our nominees," he added. The search committee meeting will be held at 4pm.
