Chennai: About 15 houses in Saidapet slum have been washed away following torrential rains. Most of the houses made of brick with tin roof have been destroyed in the heavy downpour. The slum dwellers were busy shifting their household items such as gas cylinder and furniture to a nearby school. The narrow passage inside the slum was filled with people carrying various household materials. According to the slum dwellers, out of 3,000 people residing in the slum 1,000 had already vacated. The remaining people were moving out of the slums.
“Since early morning we have been shifting our household items. Last night it rained so hard that water entered our homes and drowned every item inside the house. There was neck deep water,” said resident, S. Vijay. “The school where we temporarily moved our items is full. We need to look out for other schools.” He is tense about the expenditure he has to incur in rebuilding a new house, he said, “It was a huge loss. I have to spend a lot of money in building a new house.”
