Rains bring Nellore to a halt

Train services towards Chennai and Renigunta from Nellore were also hit

Nellore/Ongole: Heavy rain during the last 24 hours has thrown life out of gear and is posing a serious threat to the lives of people living in low lying areas.

Official records state two persons were killed in the district. A fisherman drowned in the Bay of Bengal when he went for fishing at Vidavalur and an elderly man succumbed to inclement weather at Nayudupeta.

The average rainfall recorded was 12.5 cm during the last 24 hours, ending at 8.30 am and 10.4 cm at 5 pm on Monday. The unprecedented rainfall led to as many as 92 irrigation tanks breaching in different mandals of the district.

Revenue and police officials shifted 6,000 people to 52 relief camps as a precautionary measure. Traffic on the Nellore-Chennai National Highway came to a grinding halt from 3 pm on Monday following inundation of the road with floodwaters of Kalangi River between Doravarisathram and Sullurpeta. A team of the National Disaster Relief Force is being rushed to Sullurpeta.

Train services towards Chennai and Renigunta from Nellore were also hit following water overflow on the tracks between Gudur and Renigunta as well as Sullurpeta and Chennai.
