President Pranab Mukherjee frowns at awards return

The President noted “sensitive minds” sometimes get disturbed by some incidents

New Delhi: Virtually disapproving of the returning of honours by writers and intellectuals, President Pranab Mukherjee said on Monday such awards should be “cherished and valued” by recipients, and emotions should not “overrun reason”.

The President noted “sensitive minds” sometimes get disturbed by some incidents, but added there should be a “balanced” expression of concern in such cases. “Prestigious awards are a public recognition of talent, merit and hard work by peers and leaders... (they) should be cherished and valued,” he said while presenting the Press Council awards.

“Emotions should not overrun reason, and disagreement should be expressed through debate and discussion.” The President said this during a function organised by the Press Council of India here.
