Opposition leaders reach out to flood victims
Leader of Opposition, Vijayakanth, visited flooded areas of KK Nagar and MGR Nagar market
Chennai: With unprecedented floods in city bringing normal life to a complete halt, leaders of opposition parties made a beeline to meet people in rain affected parts of the city to distribute welfare assistances.
After opening medical camps for the flood affected people in his Kolathur Assembly constituency, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin visited flood affected areas of Peravalur, Paper Mills Road and Kolathur.
He also asked his party men to contact Corporation to take steps to drain flood water immediately.
He told the media that he has urged the state government to come out with a white paper on flood relief measures expenditure. Later, he visited rain hit areas of Villivakkam and distributed five kilogram rice packets to 500 people.
PMK’s chief ministerial candidate Anbumani Ramadoss visited water logged areas in Kolathur including Vivekanada Street and Rajiv Gandhi Nagar and distributed rice packets to needy. “People are suffering without drinking water and power due to floods. The city is fully affected by floods as the state government failed to take pre-monsoon preparedness work. I had written to chief minister listing out the steps to be taken before the onset of monsoon but no action was taken on it,” Dr Ramadoss told reporters.
Blaming both the AIADMK and DMK for the floods, he said both parties lacked a vision to develop the city. “That’s why over 90 per cent of the rain water is allowed to drain into the sea,” he said, asking the state government to enhance compensation to people killed in rain related incidents from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.
Leader of Opposition, Vijayakanth, visited flooded areas of KK Nagar and MGR Nagar market. MDMK general secretary Vaiko provided meals to flood affected people of Dharumapuram in Valluvarkottam after hearing their woes.
