Chennai: To monitor wildlife during heavy downpour, Vandalur zoo authorities have made night rounds compulsory by animal keepers. Particularly, after a part of the zoo outer compound wall to about 35 metres collapsed, a section of men workers are retained at the zoo for night shift.
“All efforts are in place to ensure that the animals are intact at zoo. The enclosures are under surveillance and water levels inside the mounds and animal safari areas are periodically checked”, zoo director K. S. V. P. Reddy said.
“The wall collapse has been temporarily repaired and there is no possibility of animals straying as a two tier protection measure is already in place.” Pointing out that footfall in the zoo has reduced due to rain, a source said the Otteri lake in zoo and adjacent catchment areas around zoo were also brimming forcing the staff to monitor rain round- the-clock.
