Jayalalithaa criticises fuel price hike

In a statement, she said the hike in prices of diesel and petrol was unjustified
Chennai: A day after oil companies revised fuel prices, Chief Minister, J. Jayalalithaa, on Monday condemned the hike. She demanded the Centre to ensure that oil companies withdraw the price hike at the earliest.
In a statement, she said the hike in prices of diesel and petrol was unjustified. It would lead to inflation as prices of all essential commodities will also increase.
Since last November, excise duty on diesel and petrol had been hiked five times. The Central government receives revenue for itself, but forces the price hike on the common man. When there is no significant change in global oil prices, increasing the rates based on rupee-dollar value is unfair without any reasoning, she said. The revision of petrol and diesel prices has been justified by oil companies. But, the fact is the companies do not want to share their profits and the previous UPA regime did the same mistake by similar policies on petrol and diesel issues earning the wrath of the public.
The state has been opposing such price fixation policy for fuel products, as it is against the poor, she said.
