GHMC raids illegal parking lots
Hyderabad: South zone traffic officials raided 12 parking lots in Sultan Bazaar, Narayanguda and Abids and found seven of them to be illegal — without GHMC permissions.
All the 12 parking contractors were charging exorbitant rates, much higher than the GHMC prescribed fees. The Traffic department has issued a notice to the GHMC commissioner to cancel the licenses of the five lots that were being operated legally.
The raid was conducted in the first week of November in 12 different parking lots, falling under Narayanguda, Abids and Sultan Bazaar. Of the 12, seven lots had no permissions.
But all 12 were charging '10 for two wheelers and '20 for four-wheelers, which is not as per the standard fees prescribed by the GHMC.
South zone authorities booked cheating and extortion cases against the illegal parking lots. For the five legal spaces, they have written to the GHMC commissioner to cancel their licenses.
The city Traffic department has planned several free parking spaces in the city. The additional commissioner, traffic, and his team have identified over 200 spaces in the city where free parking facilities will be provided.
The zonal deputy commissioners of traffic have directed their inspectors to identify areas where free parking can be implemented. With regard to spreading awareness on standard rates fixed by the GHMC, the traffic department is displaying parking fee charts at city junctions, announcements on FM radio and on the official Facebook page of the department.
