BITS Pilani, TIFR deny getting UGC fiat

TIFR officials said that also did not receive any UGC communication

Hyderabad: After reports that the UGC has ordered 10 institutions to shut down their offshore campuses including the Hyderabad campuses of BITS Pilani and TIFR, officials from the institutions said they have not received any communication regarding this from the UGC.

UGC’s regulations on institutions deemed to be universities issued in 2010 allows them to set up offshore campuses only with prior approval from the Centre or as per the recommendation of the UGC.

BITS Hyderabad director, Prof. V.S. Rao said, “We did not receive any communication from the UGC on shutting down offshore campuses. Our other campuses have also not got any such message. Our campus was constructed before 2009 and the UGC regulation of 2010 does not apply to us.”

TIFR officials said that also did not receive any UGC communication. In a 2014 ruling the Karnataka HC had quashed the UGC regulation on offshore campuses by deemed universities in a case filed by seven educational institutions.
