20 per cent drop in delivery, arrival of letters

Postal officials said additional vehicles were provided by the corporation when requested in north and central Chennai
Chennai: Postal services to and from the city have impacted with a 10-20 per cent decline in delivery and arrival of posts as heavy rains have obstructed the transportation of postal vehicles in
most parts of the city on Monday.
Postal department sources said delivery was affected as postal vehicles were forced to halt at various points in the city due to severe water logging.
“Movement of vehicles was difficult throughout the city but in areas such as Arakkonam, Avadi and other parts of northern Chennai the situation was worse,” said Mervin Alexander, Postmaster General.
Postal officials said additional vehicles were provided by the corporation when requested in north and central Chennai. Heavy rains also hit courier business. One of the leading private courier
services in the city cited a 35-40 per cent decline in arrival and departures from other states on Monday.
“Most large vehicles arriving from parts of Andhra, Kerala and Karnataka were severely affected due to tree felling in places like Chittoor, Vijayavada, Hosur and Marthandam areas,” said a senior marketing official at a private courier service based in Guindy.
