2 years on, no clues on attacker
Cops worked the case for several months without any definitive clues
BENGALURU: Two years have passed since an assailant attacked 40-year-old Jyothi Uday, manager with a bank, in an ATM kiosk near Hudson Circle in the heart of the city. But till now, the police have not got any credible clues to hunt down the attacker. The incident, reported on November 19, 2013, had sent shock waves across the country. It made the police and the governments to sit up and issue a stringent set of guidelines to the banks on maintaining security at ATM booths.
Despite taking up intense investigation and following several leads, the police have still not succeeded in getting a single clue on the accused. Even today, a police team is working on the case and is in constant touch with their counterparts in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, as the police suspect that the assailant hails from one of these states. When Deccan Chronicle asked Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) M. Chandrasekar on the hurdles before the police in nabbing the accused, he said, “The anonymity of the attacker is the biggest challenge for us. Hundreds of policemen have worked on this case for several months, yet we could not get any fruitful information about the accused. But we have not lost hope. A team is still working on this case. The team members periodically visit Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and exchange information with the police there. We hope we will nab him one day.”
The police force has spent several lakhs of rupees and used close to 500 policemen to crack the case. It was one of the biggest manhunts where such a large number of policemen from Karnataka and the neighbouring states were deputed to track down the criminal. During the hunt for forest brigand Veerappan the state had set up a Special Task Force and sent hundreds of policemen to the forests.
The fact that there is no other case registered against the assailant in Karnataka or any other state has made the search even more difficult. “It’s easy for the police to nab anyone who has a criminal background, as we maintain a database of all criminals. In this case, however, we are not sure whether this was his first offence,” a senior official said.
