Rahul claimed to be British, says Swamy; Congress refutes allegation

Swamy said that he had obtained the documents from the law authorities in Britain

New Delhi: Releasing documents where Rahul Gandhi allegedly declared himself a British citizen, Subramanian Swamy on Monday demanded that the Congress party vice-president be stripped off his Indian citizenship and Parliamentary membership.

Releasing the documents earlier on the day, Swamy said that Gandhi identified himself as a British citizen on the annual returns of a UK based firm 'Backops Limited,' and also claimed that the 45-year-old was the director and the secretary of the company.

Meanwhile, the Congress party has refuted the allegations through a press release, saying, "From the From the day he was born, Shri Rahul Gandhi has held Indian citizenship and Indian passport and has never held citizenship of any other country nor has he represented as such. The allegation by Dr Swamy is entirely false."

Adding that Rahul Gandhi never held any account in Pictet Bank, Zurich, and that he has never been questioned or detained at Logan Airport, Boston with undeclared cash, the press release said that the allegations were a complete falsehood that Swamy is in habit of falsely repeating for decades for his malicious political motives and to gain cheap publicity.

The sole purpose of this stunt appears to be to divert attention from the defeat in the Bihar elections and policy paralysis, the release added.
