India, China discuss border issue, South China Sea
New Delhi: Top military officials from India and China on Monday met during which the contentious border issue is believed to have been discussed, besides the South China Sea, among other pressing issues.
A 26-member-strong delegation led by General Fan Changlong, Vice-Chairman of China's powerful Central Military Commission (CMC) met with the Indian delegation headed by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar at the South Block.
Incidentally, the visit comes at a time when Army chief Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag is in Japan on an official visit. Gen Suhag's visit comes seven months after Parrikar visited Japan and agreed to deepen military cooperation.
Last month, Japan took part in the Malabar naval exercise involving India and the US. While, the ships of three countries took part in the naval exercise, a contingent of the Indian Army was exercising with their Chinese counterpart in China's Kunming area.
Changlong is accompanied with Admiral Sun Jianguo, deputy chief of general staff of the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army (PLA), and Zhu Fuxi, political commissar of the PLA Chengdu Military Area Command (MAC).
The Chinese team arrived on Sunday following their visit to Pakistan where they met with Prime Minister Nawaz harif and its Army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif. Changlong said in Islamabad that the mutually supportive cooperation in the field of defence is a critical factor in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
