Congress, IUML look to unite after poll debacle
MALAPPURAM: IUML and Congress leaders met at Malappuram to discuss various measures to strengthen unity within the UDF. Congress leader AP Anilkumar met IUML district secretary P Abdul Hameed and Congress district president E Muhammed Kunji on Saturday.
The leaders meet also decided to ensure a joint effort in the election of the heads of local administrative bodies which is scheduled to be held on November 18 and November 19.
Later addressing a press conference, Mr Anilkumar said that the Congress and IUML would be united and would fight against both the CPM and BJP in the district. The Congress would not take a soft stand against the BJP, Anilkumar said.
The allegation that the BJP came second in Thiruvananthapuram while the UDF got the second slot in other areas was a result of a secret deal between the UDF and BJP was baseless, he said.
Mr Anilkumar also said that the BJP would not be an influential factor in the state as a majority of people in the state were secular. He also said that the UDF would look into its failure in Malappuram district in the local body polls.
“We did not get the expected success in the district and IUML and the Congress leadership has already taken various steps to strengthen the unity in the UDF which would reflect soon in the district”, he added.
