2,000 teachers in Medak moonlight
Hyderabad: Government teachers in Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s home district Medak, besides Nalgonda and Ranga Reddy (RR), have been found to be engaged more in side businesses than teaching.
The School Education department had received complaints that nearly 2,000 teachers in Medak were actively engaged in chit business while about 3,000 teachers each in Nalgonda and RR districts were involved in real estate businesses.
It came to the notice of the department that due to their side business, the teachers were not in a position to concentrate fully on teaching. They were also skipping their duties frequently after signing the attendance registers. Some teachers in remote areas were also using local graduates or tenth/inter pass outs to teach on their behalf.
The large scale complaints against teachers over this issue had forced the government to issue directions to District Education Officers (DEOs) to curb this menace.
Following this, the Nalgonda DEO, S. Viswanatha Rao, had issued a notice to teachers recently, directing them to desist from engaging in side-businesses and had warned them of suspension if they were found to be involved in non teaching activities.
“We have received hundreds of complaints against teachers engaging in side-businesses and neglecting their duties in schools. Most of the complaints pertain to teachers engaging in chit business and real estate. Teachers in villages surrounding Yadagirigutta are more into real estate business due to the realty boom following the state government’s plans to develop Yadagirigutta temple on par with Tirupati. Notices were issued to teachers to stay away from such non-teaching activities. They were warned of suspension if they continued to indulge in such activities. Later, a departmental inquiry will be ordered based on which such teachers can be dismissed from service,” said Mr Rao.
The Medak DEO was also asked to issue such notices to teachers after it was found that about 2,000 teachers were into chit fund businesses with an annual turnover of Rs 5 crore.
It was found that such teachers were not only neglecting their duties but also disturbing other teachers by forcing them to join their chit business groups and real estate dealings, offering them commissions on the business targets they achieved.
