Visakhapatnam: Indian Navy gets Maareech torpedo
Visakhapatnam: Dedicating the latest faci-lity for experimental hydro dynamics for testing ships models and submerged bodies Seakeep-ing and Manoeuvring Basin (SMB) and handing over the Advanced Tor-pedo Defense System ‘Maareech’ to Indian Navy at NSTL here on Saturday, Union Defense minister Manohar Parr-ikar expressed his pleasure over the close co-ordination between DRDO and Indian Navy and stated that the strong tie up between DRDO and three Armed Forces will improve the indigenous concept in defense products.
Commending the NSTL for building the most advanced SMB in Vizag, Mr Parrikar said that SMB could be used by civilian shipbuilders and it could also commercially viable. The advanced anti-torpedo defense system Maareech designed and developed by NPOL, Kochi and NSTL, Vizag in coordination with Indian Navy is a best successful story of Make in India concept, he added. The minister handed over an expendable decoy to chief of Naval Staff RK Dhowan in the presence of DRDO secretary S Christopher.
