Uber, Ola cab drivers call for help in Telangana
Hyderabad: Drivers working with app-driven taxi services Uber and Ola demanded on Saturday that the Centre and state governments regulate the functioning of the companies to protect livelihood of at least 25,000 families directly affected in Telangana due to the change in policies.
Drivers participated in a day-long hunger strike near Indira Park on Saturday. The dharna was organised by the Telangana State Cabs and Bus Operators Association and Telangana Cab Owners Welfare Association. The drivers held placards with messages asking managements of the two companies to honour their commitment.
Cabs and Bus Operators Association president Syed Nizamuddin alleged that the Uber and Ola managements had failed to provide the promised business and incentives to drivers who had been enrolled as “partners”.
He said the drivers were offered a monthly income of more than Rs 70,000, following which they purchased new vehicles on loan. The two companies subsequently reduced their incentives and bookings.
He said that the Uber management had agreed to resolve the issue when they held a similar protest on August 28 this year but did not take any action. More than 150 drivers had lodged a joint complaint against the Uber management at Madhapur police station on November 10. However, the police is yet to register a case, he said.
