Guntur: The Tamil Nadu government has in principle agreed to return ancient and precious Amaravati sculptures to AP which will be helpful in promoting international tour-ism in the new capital Amaravati. Amaravati Development Authority (ADA) chief Veeranja-neyulu Jasti here on Saturday said that he wrote a letter to Tamil Madu CM Ms Jayalalithaa on October 30 seeking return of Amaravati sculptures preserved in the Chennai museum.
Mr Jasti said that these ancient sculptures were shifted to Chennai by British officials during their rule. Mr. Veeranjaneyulu said that 400 odd ancient sculptures and monuments were discovered by the British government belong to ancient Buddhist era and others in Amaravati on the banks of river Krishna.
He added that these precious monuments were kept in the National Museum at Chennai which was the former capital of the British government. He said that there is no state museum in residuary Andhra Pradesh hence a new museum with the anc-ient monuments and sculptures will reflect the rich tradition and culture of Telugus in the new capital.
