Kozhikode: Plastic recycling unit yet to restart work
Kozhikode: Despite the District Collector’s efforts to make the plastic waste recycling unit at West Hill functional by giving the responsibility to Kerala State Industrial Enterprises (KSIE), it is learnt that it would not be back to normalcy in the near future. The Corporation authorities said that the decision in this regard could be taken only in the council meeting and after floating tenders, which means the plastic waste accumulation in the City would continue and also pose a serious threat.
The issue started at the waste recycling unit after the contractor shut down the function of the unit on September 30. The UDF councillors protested against the Corporation apathy in settling the issues with the contractor and raised it in the election campaign. During the administrative rule, District Collector N Prasanth sought the help of the KSIE and persuaded successfully to get letter from them in managing the plastic waste recycling. He also revoked the bank guarantee of the contractor who breached the contract. However after the expiration of administrative rule, the things are back to square one.
“We have received a letter from the KSIE expressing their interest. However, the process can be only done after inviting a tender and also with the consent of the council,” said Kozhikode Municipal Corporation Secretary T.P Satheesan. However he could not answer how the civic body was going to deal with the plastic waste accumulation issue.
