Chennai: Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Saturday appointed senior IAS officers as special officers to expedite monsoon relief work. In a statement, she said the damage due to northeast monsoon was inevitable, despite the state’s preventive measures. Senior officers, ministers and government machinery are working on a war footing executing relief works in rain-hit areas.
The meteorological department has forecast that Tamil Nadu would receive heavy rain on November 15, 16 and 17. To expedite relief works, K. Rajaraman, S. K. Prabhakar, Sabitha, Shivdas Meena, S. Vijayakumar, Atul Anand and Kumar Jayanth have been appointed special officers.
These officers would monitor Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram, Kanyakumari and Tuticorin for a few more days.
The release also said Gagandeep Singh Bedi who is monitoring Cuddalore and Rajesh Lakhoni who is at Krishnagiri will continue to monitor the relief works. State ministers have been instructed to speed up relief works in their respective districts.
She also pointed out that in Kancheepuram, which recorded 32 cm rain on Friday, around 7,200 persons were evacuated and provided shelter at 26 special camps. Doctors examined them.
“A team of senior ministers and officials was sent to Cuddalore district following heavy rain on November 9 and 10. Power has been restored in 635 of the total 683 village panchayats”, she said.

Rural development secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi conducted review meetings and inspected canals that are vulnerable for breaching He also directed the district administration to keep two lakh sand bags ready to strengthen lake bunds and canals.
