From school students to professionals, predicting weather becomes part of daily routine
Chennai: Weather being the buzzword in the town, people from all walks of life are showing a keen interest to understand climatic changes and try to forecast what’s in store for them at any given time.
From school children, IT professionals, farmers, businessmen and even chartered accountants are all pulling out time from their busy schedule and make weather forecasting an integral part of their daily routine. The blogging community, as such, is growing in number and there are numerical cases in Chennai, wherein people have set-up their own weather stations at homes. This is a new trend that is gaining immense popularity.
For instance, a class 10 student is an admin to a dedicated Facebook page called ‘Monsoon of Chennai’, which has 101 followers. Habid Mohammed Ameen Bijli, a student of Measi Matriculation Higher Secondary School, calls himself the weather forecaster of George Town area.
“I have an indigenous rain gauge using which I measure the quantum of rainfall in my area. My friends often call me to enquire about the weather like when it will rain and how heavy the spell would be. I started following weather from 2012 and now can read the radar and satellite images making long-term and short-term predictions”, he said.
Even his personal Facebook page is full of posts relating to weather. Organic farmer R. Surya, wife of actor Pashupathy, is also an active blogger with Kea Weather. -
She owns a farmhouse at Periyapalyam, about 40 km from Chennai on GNT Road, where she undertakes organic farming and has rainwater harvesting pond. She says understanding the weather really helps in farming. “If one can learn a few simple things and terminologies, it is easy to predict because a whole lot of information is available in the web these days.
For me, I can see with some conviction looking at the radar images on when it is going to rain”. Shiva Kumar, popular by name Navok Nole among bloggers, and works with Head Tennis, says observing weather and tracking events is one of the fantastic chases.
There is another blogger Chandra Mouli, a resident of Ambattur and II year MBA student with MGR University. He has a passion for clouds and also an amateur forecaster.
A chartered accountant Sampath, working with RR Donnelley, is another senior most blogger with Kea Weather, who says weather analysis became a part and parcel of his life. “All the time, there will be 10-15 tabs opened in the phone of different sites and models, even while working at the office”.
