I would love to make a film on dance: Prabhu Deva

Prabhu Deva on why he makes films of similar genres, his fitness secret and dream to make a full-fledged dance-based flick
One finds it hard to believe that Prabhu Deva, who mesmerises audiences with his unmatched electrifying dance moves, is a man of few words off screen, although he manages to put up a palpable smile on his face while interacting with people. DC caught up with the reclusive artiste who has tried his hand successfully at choreography, acting and direction. The veteran, who forayed into production recently, has now been roped in as the brand ambassador for the Champions Tennis League, which is all set to start from November 23 onwards.
Quiz him on how it feels to be a name to be reckoned with in several fields, he says with a smile, “It’s great to excel in several things. In fact, nothing was pre-planned — I just go with the tide.” It’s been a while since Prabhu has wielded the megaphone for a Tamil film, and he declares there isn’t any particular reason for the same, nor does he have any aversion to direct south films. “There is a notion that I’m more into B’town flicks due to its extensive reach across the country. However, the fact is different. First of all, doing films continuously in Bollywood was never a pre-planned decision — it just happens. Moreover, Tamil films have expanded their market and it has a great reach among other states too,” he tells us.
Ever since his directorial debut in Bollywood, Prabhu Deva has been criticised for making predictable, run-of-the-mill flicks, which are formula driven.
Does he have plans to change track and attempt a film of different genre, apart from the regular action-comedy movies, which require the audience to ‘leave their brains at home?’ Pat comes a witty reply, “I would surely love to, but it’s difficult to find a producer who will fund the film.” Having said that, he reveals he would love to do a full-fledged film based on dance, which according to him will be a tough task to pull off.
Prabhu who is satisfied with response received for his previous outing Singh Is Bling, says language was never a barrier for him, and says that he is in talks for a Tamil film, though it’s too early to reveal anything.
Popularly known as ‘Indian Michael Jackson’ from an early stage of his career, the man in his early 40s gives credit to strict diet and exercise for his youthful looks and fitness. He says, “I check my weight every day. I feel disturbed if I have put on an extra one kilogram and work out for more time. I’m not much into the gym — I have been to gym for only, say 30 or 40 times in my whole life. I dance a lot to keep myself fit — I dance till I get exhausted.”
On being brought on board as the brand ambassador for Champions Tennis League too, he says, “I consider it as a great honour. I follow tennis — I watch Wimbledon Champion-ship if I have free time,” he says on a concluding note.
