Snapdeal follows Flipkart's footsteps, introduces 'Lite' site

Flipkart was the first in the country to introduce the Lite mobile website

Snapdeal has introduced a new mobile-optimized website for its online shopping portal—Snapdeal Lite’. The announcement came in just after Flipkart went live with their similar ‘Lite’ website. The shopping website is the second to go live in the country after all e-commerce giants recently went on to push all users to the mobile apps for their shopping. However, it seems that users are reluctant to download and install an app for shopping since it is amounting to too much space being utilized on their devices and also involves cluttering devices with multiple apps. The e-commerce giants are realizing that forcing the user to download the app is not working, hence the move to introduce the lighter website for a faster shopping experience and lesser inconvenience to the user.

The launch of The Snapdeal Lite website was announced by the CPO of Snapdeal via a tweet, which also informed that the website gains almost 33% of their traffic from slower internet connections. This also makes sense as most users are yet to upgrade from 2G to 3G, and many have a limited internet data connection. Downloading an app involves additional data consumption, taking regular updates and alerts into consideration. A single browser can help the user switch to any website without the threat of overloading their smartphones with multiple apps.

The new e-commerce websites are working with Google’s new mobile-optimization technology so that the heavy online websites can be experienced faster on a smartphone with slower internet speeds.
