Navy fest next week, operation demo on December 6
Kochi: Adding excitement to this year’s Navy day celebrations in Kochi will be the presence of the newly-commissioned warship, INS Kochi. The second of the Kolkata class warships, INS Kochi will make its first call at Kochi by end of this month, station commander Commodore P Suresh told reporters here on Friday.
“The people of Kochi will be able to have a view of the warship which bears the name of the city during the navy fest,” Cdre Suresh said.
The largest Indian-made warship and fitted with state-of the art equipment including bow-mounted sonar dome, INS Kochi is expected to undergo ship workup at the southern naval command for about two weeks.
Meanwhile, the annual Navy fest which offers the general public a chance to get a closer view of Navy operations will be held from November 20 to 22 this year.
The public will be allowed entry to three warships—INS Sujata, INS Sukanya and INS Trikhand – as well as facilities in INS Garuda and the naval base during the Navy fest.
The naval operations demonstrations in which the Navy will display its operational capabilities before the public will take place from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm on December 6 this year.
The public will be able to view it from Rajendra Maidan and Subhash Park. It will have operations demonstrations by marine commandos, display by about 10 ships including a sail training ship and about 15 fixed wing and rotary winged aircraft. INS Kochi is also expected to be part of the operation demo.
In the run up to the Navy day celebrations on December 4, the Navy will organise a medical camp on November 29 for the differently-abled at Moolamkuzhy near Fort Kochi.
