Farook College issue: Facebook forum stirs up storm on campus
Kozhikode: Protesting against the stand of the Farook College management on not withdrawing the suspension of the first year sociology student and an IIT dropout, Dinu K, for raising his voice against gender discrimination in the institution, a Facebook Forum with social activists as its members spilled over into the campus on Friday.
At the same time a group of KSU and MSF union members of the college raised slogans and extended their solidarity to the management as their sign of protest towards the Facebook forum and other media groups.
It was only after police officials reached the college, the tense situation in the campus was relived. More than 50 members of the Facebook Forum along with noted writer and social activist VP Suhara raised slogans and sang songs demanding the right of the student to study in the college free from any kind of sexual discrimination.
It should be noted that the Kerala High Court on the same day had stayed the suspension order of Dinu and directed the college management to take necessary steps.
The college authorities had on October 23 suspended eight students who had protested against the rules prohibiting boys and girls sitting together in the campus or in the canteen.
The authorities asked the parents of all the eight students to apologise for what their wards did. While seven of them complied, Dinu’s parents refused to toe the line and, as a result he was suspended.
