Farm crisis turns poll issue
Ruling party, Opposition blame each other for the agrarian crisis
Warangal: The Opposition parties are increasingly concentrating on the farmers’ issues as the campaign for the Lok Sabha by-election progresses. BJP and TD are, in specific, accusing the TRS of betraying the people, saying KCR has failed to fulfil the promises he made to the people. The TRS is blaming the Centre for not providing sufficient MSP to the farmers. Its leaders say that, as the central government is running the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), it is upto the Centre and the CCI to take required steps to help farmers.
TD leader Errabelli Dayakar Rao said the TRS did not have the right to seek votes from the people. He said the TRS betrayed the people and challenged the chief minister and his ministers to visit Enumamula agriculture market without security. “Farmers here are waiting to give a slap to the TRS ministers,” he said. He also said that when Chandrababu Naidu was the chief minister, the MSP given to cotton farmers was Rs 5500 per quintal.
BJP leader Premender asked the TRS to come forward and add Rs 900 as bonus to the already sanctioned Rs 4,100 per quintal to the farmers so that the MSP would round off to Rs 5,000 per quintal. Meanwhile, TRS leaders say they are keen on the issue of providing bonus to cotton farmers but the central government should take a decision. MP Vinod Kumar criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for spending most of his time touring foreign nations but failing to get international markets to buy cotton. He also held the previous Congress government and the present BJP government responsible for the rise in the prices of pulses.
