KOLLAM: As many as 631 child abuse cases were registered with the Childline last year marking an increase of about seven per cent in Kollam district. Out of these, 93 are sexual assault cases.
A recent study by the Childline has also revealed that over 70 percent of the assaults are by the relatives and most of the cases were registered from the eastern side of Kollam.
“The number of cases reported to the Childline in 2014-’15 has increased to 631 from last year’s 593, which also indicates that the reach of the helpline and the service used by the children have increased. These issues are resolved using the facilities, including shelters, medical help and counselling,” said Mr C. Abraham, Childline district coordinator.
The children from the district are rehabilitated at children’s home in Kollam and two other shelter homes in Mayyanad and Sakthikulangara using government aid. The greatest challenge faced by the Childline is the lag in finalising the cases. The cases taken up by the Childline are passed on to the police seeking action.
The Childline will conduct a road show throughout the state starting from Thiruvananthapuram on November 14. The project in association with the KSRTC is as part of celebrating “Childline – se – dosti week.”
A KSRTC low floor bus displaying posters, documentaries and awareness programmes will visit major spots across the state. The show to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will conclude at Pathanamthitta on November 27.
It will reach Kollam on November 15 and conduct exhibitions at the Krist Raj higher secondary school, KSRTC bus stand, Kollam beach and at Oachira junction.
