Doggies’ day out

The Bengaluru Dogathon is taking place on November 29 around the Kanteerava Stadium
From pet talks to powered adoption drives, ‘flea’ markets and fundraisers to a paw-some time – here’s something that’ll make your ears perk up, just like your pooch’s at the sound of that doorbell – a one-of-a-kind marathon with your furry, four legged friend! The city is all set to host The Bengaluru Dogathon.
The idea was apparently born out of sheer necessity for a haven that was pet-friendly, permitted peaceful walks and allowed pet socialisation. “That’s when we saw the concern. The concept was inspired by the need of a lack of recreation zones in Bengaluru for pet owners and pets, and the need for pet walking parks,” says Shweta Sanjiv of Awe Ent, organisers of the event, who conceptualised this furry treat along with Pradeep Kumar and its director, Parikshit Das. The walk will be flagged off from the gates of St Josephs’ School and onto a 3.5 km track all around Kanteerava Stadium that should take about 45 minutes to cover. After tiring out your pooch, there are activity zones to perk them back up as well. “They can play dress up, enter contests for the heaviest pooch or the macho-est eater. Pet parents can also regale them with puppet shows, song requests, live grooming and food and accessory stalls for their dogs,” says Parikshit.
This world doesn’t just belong to humans, yet, everything seems to be about them. This event comes as a breath of fresh air as one solely dedicated to man’s best friend. “As pet parents, we seem to have several queries about them. A rendezvous of this nature is better than looking up what’s best for your pet on the Internet,” says 25-year-old Anchal Sharma who will make it to the fete with her pups, Rocky and Nia. As the founder of Pupscribe, a portal that allows you to subscribe gift boxes for your pet every month, this is also her market research. “It’s the perfect place to see how parents pamper their pets,” smiles Anchal. With silent demonstrations by animal activists and NGOs, this social affair will also inspire you to be a part of powerful movements like Adopt, Don’t Shop for instance, and will give you an insight into how to take care of your strays too. Add to the mix, industry experts on dog grooming, behavioural training and health care and you’ve struck doggy gold! “It also has a dog show – something that I’ve always wanted to be a part of, but have never chanced upon. This is Maggie’s chance to shine,” smiles Dolma, as she shops for haute couture for her six-month old pet Great Dane for the fashion leg of the Dogathon. Ready, set, woof!
