‘I am bad at promoting myself’

Mini-screen superstar Kishore Satya is elated to have got a path-breaking role in Gemini after two years
Kishore Satya, familiar to Malayalis as Dr Balachandran in the serial Karuthamuthu, is back to films after two years. He will be seen in a prominent role in the upcoming movie Gemini directed by P.K. Baburaj. Baburaj’s invitation to the movie came as a surprise for Kishore. “I am not good at promoting myself, which is a drawback in movies. Usually, I get roles whenever someone whom I know makes a movie. Baburaj knew me; he was the associate director of the serial The Officer in which I have acted.”
“That was back in 2008. So, when I got this call, I was happy that he remembered me even after so many years,” says Kishore, adding that Gemini is a kind of re-launching movie for Baburaj. “His last movie was Chevalier Michael. So, on the safer side, he could have gone for an actor quite active in the film industry. It might have been a difficult task for him to convince the producer and others to cast me. Though I have many friends in M’wood, I am happy that he remembered me,” an elated Kishore says. That was the sole reason for Kishore to take up this role amidst his busy schedules in serials.
He is appearing as Jojo Varghese, a school principal, in Gemini. He is one among the three important actors in the movie. Kishore says that attitude of his character is totally different from the get-up of the school principals we are familiar with. “Usually, we expect an aged school principal. In this movie, my character is a young principal who is jovial with children and possess a different attitude compared to normal characters. It breaks the stereotype,” explains Kishore.
Kishore is quite choosy in mini-screen too as he doesn’t want to be stereotyped. “I got into serials after doing two movies. In the last 10 years, I have acted only in four serials; I have been very selective. I don’t like acting as a meek male character who obeys whatever the women in the family says, which is a regular scene in serials nowadays. Whenever I choose a role, I make sure that character has a stance. The serial industry has changed. More than quality, quantity is what matters now. Like, they want to take three episodes in one go,” he says.
“I chose Karuthamuthu because I play a lovable and bold character in that. Also, it features a dark-complexioned woman as female lead,” he adds. Kishore is getting good responses for his role as Dr Balachandran. “I skipped movies for two years as it was difficult for me to manage both. However, I have good expectations about Gemini. I believe that it would fetch me more good roles from movies,” he hopes.
