Indian Institute of Science makes it to top 100 varsity ranking

Stanford University ranks number one
Bengaluru: The Indian Institute of Science, which has, over the years, received flak for not appearing in global university rankings has crept into the 99th spot in the world's top 100 universities for engineering and technology. Stanford University ranks number one, followed by the California Institute of Technology and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Phil Baty, Editor, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, described India as “this year's stand out success story,” for making its debut in one of the most prestigious ranking categories, that represent only the top few percent of world universities. “Whether you look at high tech sectors such as IT or aerospace engineering or more traditional fields such as steelmaking, India's engineering and technology prowess is highly visible the world over in the shape of companies based in India or run by people born in India, such as Google and Microsoft, Infosys and Wipro or Tata and Mittal,” he said.
Asia has made a splash in the rankings this year, with 25 positions in the top 100, a significant jump from 18 last year. The U.S. dominates the list, although the number of American universities that feature has dropped from 34 to 31.
The Times Higher Education ranking for engineering and technology applies rigorous standards, using global benchmarks across areas like teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
