Governor P Sathasivam: Empower women legally
He said that police personnel are the vital link between legal aid committees and female victims
Thiruvananthapuram: Governor P. Sathasivam on Thursday called for ‘legal empowerment of women through legal literacy’ to attain equality and empowerment. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the International Conference on Gender Equality (ICGE 1) at Kovalam organised by Gender Park in partnership with UN Women, Mr Sathasivam said that the state should endeavour to set up more women’s cells in police stations.
He said that police personnel are the vital link between legal aid committees and female victims. He observed that the state legal services can be a tool for women empowerment provided all the institutions play their roles dutifully and proactively.
The ceremony, attended by Indian and international policymakers, academicians, activists and transgenders, set the tone for the three-day event, which aims, through dialogue and discussion, to create a “movement forward towards gender equality”.
The UK-based scholar Naila Kabeer highlighted the importance of self-employment which eventually leads to economic empowerment.
“Women becoming self-employed and independent is important for economic empowerment. Such an orientation gives them education empowerment,” said Ms Kabeer, who works at Gender Institute at the London School of Economics.
