GHMC fails to mark hawker zones in Hyderabad
Under the scheme, hawkers were to be given ID cards and allotted zones where they can set up their kiosks
Hyderabad: The creation of hawker zones does not seem to be on the GHMC’s priority list, despite the increasing cases of encroachment of footpaths and roads. The identification of hawker zones was announced in January, but is still not complete.
Under the scheme, hawkers were to be given ID cards and allotted zones where they can set up their kiosks.
“The issue is inter-linked with the police department and we have to coordinate on traffic issues. Till that is done, we cannot move forward. The survey of zones is also not complete,” said an official from the urban community development department of GHMC.
Even though the encroachers are not ready to move to the hawker zones, successive state governments have spent over Rs 22 crore since 2006 on the project, which hasn’t yielded any result.
