The deluge and after: Tomato prices spiral to Rs 50 per kg
City witnessed shortage of vegetables including beans, potato and tomato
Bengaluru: The week long heavy rain have brought down the temperature and made the city cool. But following the rain, city has been severely hit by the shortage of fresh vegetables and sudden rise in the prices.
On Thursday, the city witnessed shortage of vegetables including beans, potato and tomato following poor supply from neighbouring states of Andhra, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. Adding to the woes, the rate of tomato crossed Rs 50 per kilogram. According to the vendors, crop loss due to the heavy rain has led to the shortage in supply and sudden spurt in the price.
According to the Horticultural Producers' Co-operative Marketing and Processing Society Ltd (HOPCOMS) rate list, tomato price was Rs 40 per kilo gram in its outlets. But in the open market, prices were high as Rs 50per kg. Coupled with high demand due to Deepavali festival, the prices have surged once again.
Mr. Rajesh Gowda, a whole sale vegetable vendor from Malleshwaram said tomato was supplied from parts of Kolar, Tamil Nadu and Andhra to the city.
“But all these areas are witnessing heavy rains which have led to crop loss and sudden increase in the price of tomato.
The price of other vegetables has not increased. This trend expected to continue for another week,” he said.
Supply hit
Following the heavy rain, the supply of all the vegetables has come down drastically. All the important vegetable markets of the city including KR Market have been hit by the poor supply. According to Mr. Balu Patil, a retail vendor, vegetable shortage at the time of festival season created a lot of problems.
"We get only potato and onion from the North Karnataka side. Other vegetables including coriander leaves and carrot have not been supplied in adequate quantities. As rain is expected to continue for two -three more days, the situation is expected to worsen further,” he said.
An officer from HOPCOMS informed that there was no shortage in the supply.
“Only tomato rates are skyrocketing. It is because of rain. Prices are expected to ease in next three-four days,” he said.
