Woman smuggling 4.6 kg gold arrested in Hyderabad

Officials seized the smuggled gold and the accused’s passport

Hyderabad: A woman who was being used as a “mule” by gold smugglers was caught at the Shamshabad Airport on Wednesday night.

G. Malleshwari, 42, from Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh, was trying to smuggle in 4.6 kg of gold bars worth about Rs 1.2 crore that were under her sari. She was working as a domestic help in Dubai.

On Wednesday, she boarded Thai Airways Flight TG 329 at Bangkok and landed at Shamshabad at around 12.30 am.

“She concealed four 1-kg bars and six bars of 100 gm each under her sari. She hid them in her waist area and was trying to exit through the green channel without declaring the gold,” said a senior customs official at the airport.

The officials at the exit gate found her behaviour suspicious and on inquiry, she confessed carrying the gold.

Officials seized the smuggled gold and the accused’s passport. The case is under investigation.
