Daughter gets one up over dad
Kamal Haasan and Shruti were competing with each other with Thoongavanam and Vedalam
In the Diwali race where Kamal Haasan and Shruti were competing with each other with Thoongavanam and Vedalam respectively, we have learnt from box office collections that the daughter has superseded her dad. Thoongavanam, which features Kamal, Trisha, Prakash Raj, Sampath, Kishore, and others is directed by Rajesh Selva. Vedalam is an Ajith-starrer, which has Shruti Haasan, Lakshmi Menon and Soori in pivotal roles.
According to sources, Thoongavanam was released in over 375 screens Tamil Nadu, while Vedalam was released in more than 520 screens. The heavy rains on Diwali day did not dampen the spirit of movie buffs, and both the films opened to full houses in all centres. However, the wide release of Vedalam has helped the film to make such big business, reportedly grossing Rs 15.5 crores on day one. Thoongavanam, which garnered highly positive reviews from critics and audiences, reportedly collected Rs 4 crores.
By the weekend, collections are expected to go up sizably, says a trade analyst. It may be recalled that a few months back, the father-daughter duo clashed at the box-office with Uttama Villain and Gabbar is Back. BO results were quite different then. In their US releases, Kamal Haasan’s film surpassed daughter Shruti’s Gabbar is Back in terms of BO collections, despite the fact that the Akshay Kumar-starrer was released in more screens than Uttama Villain.
