Rs 2,024 crore revised grant for Kochi Metro

It is felt that if metro line through Info Park is realised then it would be beneficial to many

Thiruvananthapuram: Cabinet on Wednesday decided to grant revised administrative sanction worth Rs 2,024 crore for the construction of metro line from Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium to Kakkanad covering a stretch of 11.2 km.

At the Cabinet briefing Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said decision had also been taken to fix the share of Central government at 20 per cent and to submit work for Central government’s approval.

He said the Central government had informed that all the development activities in connection with Kochi Metro Project in future should be taken up by the State government. The Kochi Metro had taken a stand that 11.2 km of metro line from Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium to Kakkanad was not part of the metro project that had received sanction earlier but is a special project which can be clubbed with the present one.

It is felt that if metro line through Info Park is realised then it would be beneficial to many. At the board meeting of the Kochi Metro, the entire new project came in for detailed discussion and it has now been forwarded to Central Government for its approval.

Sanction for Cochin Integrated Water Transport System

The Cabinet also accorded sanction to the Cochin Integrated Water Transport System for improving the public transport system of Kochi using fast and safe boats. The project will be submitted to the Centre to seek assistance from German financial aid provider KFW. The project has been prepared by Kochi Metro Rail Limited and is estimated at Rs 682.01 crore. The amount for land acquisition has not been included in this. The share of the State government will be Rs 1,02.30 crore.
