CHENNAI: Award-winning Tamil filmmaker Pratap Pothen has been keenly tracking political developments in Kerala for the last few days. And from his Chennai residence he has been venting his views online against K.M. Mani, who resigned on Tuesday as Kerala finance minister. “He stabbed Kerala Congress founder member K. M. George in the back for power. He was a Brutus and I know it because my father Kolathinkal Pothen funded the founding of Kerala Congress,” Pothen, who won a national award for best debutant director way back in 1984 for his movie Meendrum Oru Kathal Kathai, in which he also acted as a hero opposite Radhika, told DC. Kolanthigal Pothen was a businessman in Thiruvananthapuram.
“Six months ago I put up a status message about the Finance Minister of Kerala K.M. Mani. Then I started getting hate mails. I was abused. This man (Mani) had sold out thirteen budgets of Kerala. He was a man who owned less than an acre of land when he started in politics and today he is one of the richest landlords of Kerala,” Pratap Pothen said in his Facebook account. He has more than 91,000 followers on FB and his political posts are widely shared.
Today he feels vindicated. A day after the Kerala high court endorsed the Vigilance court order to investigate the bar bribery case further, Mani resigned from the cabinet on Tuesday. Mani was alleged to have received a bribe of Rs 1 crore from Kerala state bar hotel owners' association, to renew the licences of 400-plus bars dispensing IMFL. Mani has been MLA of Pala constituency since 1965. Pratap Pothen has acted in nearly 100 movies made in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Hindi. He had also directed movies in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.
