Bengaluru: Car number plate mix-up sends police into a tizzy
Bengaluru: A blunder by a number plate mechanic sent traffic cops into a tizzy after a car was booked for violation and challan sent to the address of the offender who came on to challenge the challan claiming that it was not his car which was of a different make, but it was his registration number.
Later, a team investigated and managed to trace the car and the owner who accepted that it was her car involved in the violation, but told the cops it was not her vehicle’s registration number. It took time for the cops and the lady to realise that it was a mistake of a number plate mechanic who repaired the plate of the car recently after a minor accident that led to the confusion.
The cops at the Traffic Management Centre were not amused when the owner of a golden Maruti Celerio turned up and challenged a challan claiming that it was not his car that was involved in the violation, but the registration number KA-03 MU-9510 was his. The Bangalore Traffic Police had raised a violation on a maroon colour Toyota Etios cross car bearing the same registration number for stopping on a pedestrian cross with a photo proof that was put up on the BTP website.
The cops after confirming that the original registration number is that of the Maruti Celerio, formed a team in the TMC to trace the Etios Cross. After much effort, they traced the car and its owner who was a lady. She explained that she was not aware of her car’s number change as about three weeks ago, her car was involved in a minor accident where her front side registration number plate got damaged and she had replaced a new number plate with a number plate mechanic.
“I had told him my car no. is KA-03 MU 5910, but while listening to it, he (mechanic) might have mistakenly understood as KA-03 MU 9510 and made the number plate,” the police told quoting the lady. Later when the cops checked the rear number plate of the lady’s car, the registration number was the actual one.
The confusion was sorted out with the Maruti Celerio owner and the lady who paid up her pending traffic violation dues at the TMC and changed her number plate to her registration number.
