Animal lovers fear strays being killed

Animal lovers in the city raise their apprehensions against sterilizing dogs

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Animal lovers are apprehensive about the city corporation’s sterilisation drive launched after the recent High Court judgement directing local bodies to address the stray dog menace.

Allegations of corruption are also mounting. People for Animals’ (PFA) Trivandrum chapter trustee Latha Indira said the civic authorities kill strays in the name of sterilisation.

“There is something fishy about it. They started catching dogs a day after the High Court direction and we are sure that they sterilised none,” she said.

“The corporation has infrastructure facilities for sterilisation only at their units at Pettah and Thiruvallam and none of the dogs caught reached there.”

She said dogs were simply disappearing and it's totally unfair. “They create fake records and when we question, they claim dogs were released, which is not true. We are sure that no surgery was done at all. We tried to track the vehicle but, unfortunately, lost trail. We are in the process of collecting proof,” she said.

However, corporation veterinary wing authorities claimed that they have put on hold dog catching. “We are in the final stages of recruitment and two veterinarians would join by next week,” said an official.

Corporation may have a tough time to implement the court order as the protesters have come together to raise their voice against the move.
