Most jail breakers in Kerala roam scotfree

In 2010, as many as 13 (four from Jail and nine from police) convicts escaped

Kochi: Of the 54 jail and police escapees, between 2010 and 2014, only 16 have been rearrested so far and the remaining 38 are on the run. Through the years there has been an increase in the number of prison escapees, reveals the data of the National Crime Records Bureau.

Convicts of various murder, rape, drug abuse and extortion cases etc are in the list of people who have escaped from Jail and police. Experts opined that overcrowding in jails is the reason for this mess but the government has not taken any measures to improve the capacity.

In 2010, as many as 13 (four from Jail and nine from police) convicts escaped and none of them has been rearrested even after four years. The number of escapees came down to three (from police) in 2011 and they are also still at large.

Of the 12 (nine from prison and two from police) convicts who escaped in 2012, police could rearrest six of them while five were rearrested in 2013 and 2014 of the 13 (four from jail and nine from police in both the years) escapees in both the years. The jails in Kerala have more convicts than their capacity and it’s a worrying factor.

The three central jails in the state have a capacity of 2273 inmates but against this, 2844 inmates were present as per the figures available in 2014.
