RMP unlikely to align with UDF in Onchiyam, Chorod

It fears that ties with UDF will erode its Left base and CPM may exploit the situation

KOZHIKODE: The Revolutionary Marxist party (RMP) is unlikely to accept or give support to the UDF in Onchiyam and Chorod gram panchayats, respectively. According to sources, the RMP leadership thinks that accepting the UDF support is suicidal and it would question the very identity of the party.

Most likely, the RMP will sit in the opposition in the two panchayats without compromising on its Left politics. "The decision will be taken within a couple of days. Anyway, we will not go for a decision which questions the very essence of our politics," said N. Venu, RMP state secretary.

Of the total 17 seats in Onchiyam, the CPM has got seven, RMP six and UDF four. The UDF had already offered its support to the RMP to rule the panchayat.

In return, they are expecting the RMP backing in neighbouring Chorod, where the UDF has got a golden chance to end the CPM's four-decade rule with the RMP support. Of the 21 seats in Chorod panchayat, the UDF and LDF have nine seats each, the RMP has two and the BJP one.

The RMP lost two seats in Onchiyam this time and the CPM gained two. Last time, the RMP ruled the grama panchayat with an 'under-the-carpet' deal with the UDF. The UDF members would desist from crucial meetings with the RMP getting a majority over CPM members.

This time, the RMP is wary that any kind of truck with the UDF would be exploited by the CPM and it would lead to the end of the Left politics that the RMP has been standing for.

Sources said that in Onchiyam, the RMP would sit in the opposition and will ponder the possibility of bringing a non-confidence motion later.
