Vijayawada lacks space for public square

The search for a ‘public square’ in Vijayawada has become a never-ending task
Vijayawada: The search for a ‘public square’ in Vijayawada has become a never-ending task for the police department. This once again proves that Vijayawada is so congested that an open space for a gathering of around 200 persons is simply not available. Post-announcement of capital region around Vijayawada, various organisations from across the state started protesting in Vijayawada to get their voices heard.
The existing unofficial place for demonstration of protests, Victoria Jubilee Museum Centre on MG Road, proved insufficient for the public and motorists passing by due to huge number of participants. As it is close to the CM’s camp office, police planned to shift it and started searching for an alternative. However, the search for ‘public square’ (Dharna Chowk) is still on and the police is conducting recce to find suitable venue.
Though Lenin Centre was considered initially, the name was dropped since it is close to the APCRDA office where many delegates visit and people coming to Vijayawada via the railway station also pass by.
Representatives of political parties and other organisations preferred continuing in the same venue since it is close to sub-collector’s office to make a representation after the protest. Police is also looking at a junction at BRTS Road where the traffic is comparatively less and more road space is available.
“It would be a great help if we get to see suitable venues to make a choice. Ideally it should be an open space that does not affect movement during protests,” said a police official.
