Telangana government: Speed governors must for school buses
The orders will be issued on Monday
Hyderabad: Telangana government has made it mandatory for transport vehicles, including school buses, to be fitted with speed governors by April 1, 2016. The orders will be issued on Monday.
The speed governors will restrict vehicles like school buses at 60 kmph and transport buses/ vehicles at 80 kmph. As per the fresh guidelines, transport vehicles manufactured on or after October 1, 2015 shall be equipped or fitted with speed governors by the vehicle manufacturers either during the manufacturing stage or at the dealership stage.
For vehicles registered before October 1, 2015, operators themselves have to install speed governors by April 1, 2016. Two wheelers, three wheelers, quadricycles, four-wheel vehicles used for carrying passengers and goods, with seating capacity not exceeding eight passengers and not exceeding 3,500 kg gross vehicle weight, fire tenders, ambulances and police vehicles have been exempted from installing speed governors.
Joint transport commissioner T. Raghunath said though there was no place in the city which had a maximum speed limit of 60 kmph, drivers tended to cross the limit on empty roads. He said that the speed governors were aimed to check this trend. “Basically, the speed governors are aimed at safer journey of school kids from nearby semi-urban areas and villages to the city. Hundreds of school buses carry students from these areas to the city every day and drivers often resort to overspeeding on the outskirts to meet school timings, which are resulting in a large number of accidents every year. This can be checked if speed governors are fixed as they cannot go beyond 60 kmph,” he added.
