Secretariat, Ripon Buildings deserted

Staff attributed heavy rain, medical leave and train traffic disruption for their leave, a secretariat official told DC
Chennai: After receiving Deepavali bonus, several government employees were absent from duty on Monday leaving secretariat, tashildar offices and Ripon Buildings deserted. “Twenty per cent of my department staff was absent and another 20 per cent wanted permission to leave early. Already 10 per cent is on long leave. Staff attributed heavy rain, medical leave and train traffic disruption for their leave, a secretariat official told DC.
The usual Monday buzz at the secretariat was missing. Several departments were seen with skeletal staff post lunch. However, departments like municipal administration and water supply, revenue, rural development and energy had meetings to review monsoon arrangements. Handloom and textiles department banking on Deepavali sales, also had a busy day. Minister Gokula Indira and Cooptex officials monitored the festival sales.
State forest minister M. S. M. Anandan conducted a review meeting with forest and wildlife officials on ongoing massive tree planting. According to secretariat police sources, visit of public to Secretariat witnessed a 30 per cent decrease due to rain and Deepavali.
Leaders extend Deepavali wishes
Tamil Nadu Governor K. Rosaiah and Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa extended their Deepavali greetings to the people.
In his message, Rosaiah conveyed his "heartiest greetings" and best wishes to the people of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Jayalalithaa, in a statement, said Deepavali is being celebrated to mark the annihilation of Narakasura by Lord Vishnu for creating hardships to people, adding it was celebrated with a lot of joy and fervour. "I pray to God on this auspicious day that there shall be all-round peace and unity and all the welfare in people's lives," she said. Union minister of state for shipping Pon. Radhakrishan, BJP state president Tamizhisai Sounderrajan, DMDK leader Vijayakanth, TMC leader G. K. Vasan and state congress president E. V. K. S. Elangovan extended their greetings.
