Road accidents alarming: Bengaluru traffic police

Mishaps cluster around certain areas, claims a report

Bengaluru: The Bangalore Traffic police along with a SLS Transport Training Institute and Consultancy conducted research and analysis of statistical data of road accidents over the past few years and have identified the top ten road accident spots in the city.

“Accidents have a strong tendency to cluster around certain sites. It is quite alarming to know that same links are featuring repeatedly in the year 2013 as well as 2014, for example, Hosur Road, NH-4, Old Madras Road and Mysore Road, indicating that immediate action is needed in treating these locations,” BTP states in the report.

The consultancy has also suggested constituting a committee which should have members representing Engineering, Enforcement, Education and Evaluation sectors. Enforcement of strong road safety laws pertaining to key risk factors, speed, drunk-driving, helmets, seat belts is essential for the success of Road Safety campaigns that need to be designed with specific target groups in mind.

According to the report that was made based on the FIRs maintained by the police, ledger entries or “Panchnama” were collected from 42 traffic police stations spread across the city. It was observed that accident occurrence varies between 14-15 accidents on a daily basis on an average. Accidents are increasingly happening over the week-ends the report stated.

Accidents are occurring more in the evenings and late night hours. Two-wheeler riders, in the age group of 19-35, continue to lead the overall accident picture, followed by car drivers. About 18% of the total casualties reported are pedestrians, followed by two-wheeler riders (40%) and are categorised as Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs). Two-wheelers (41%) and cars (17%) are involved more in fatal crashes, where fatal crashes constitute about 14% of the total number of accidents.

Involvement of cars in injury accidents has increased compared to the previous years. The age group of 12 to 19 years, driving/riding mostly two-wheelers meeting with fatal crashes are on the rise over the last two years, stated the report.

Cops campaign for lane discipline

The Bangalore Traffic Police (BTP) on Monday inaugurated the campaign for lane discipline on the city roads that will be soon enforced by cops after spreading awareness on the same. Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Pratap Reddy inaugurated the campaign. Stressing the importance of lane discipline and orderly movement of traffic and responsible driving lessening the number of road accidents, the traffic police will be soon monitoring whoever commits this offence of driving in wrong lanes or switching lanes unnecessarily.

Lane discipline will be initially carried out at three major roads in the city and gradually extended to other roads. According to the BTP’s plan – in a two lane road on one side of the road, cars will be on the right side of the road where the speed limits would be within 80km/hr. On left side of the road, buses and two wheelers should commute within 50km/hr.

Goods lorries should also move on the same lane with the speed limit of 40km/hr. Dr. MA Saleem, Additional Commissioner for Police (Traffic) said, “For the first two weeks, we are not going to penalise for lane indiscipline, but we will warn them. Later on, the offenders will be penalised with Rs 100 for the first time and Rs 300 for subsequent violations.”
