PUDUCHERRY: Ahead of Deepavali, political parties are in a race to outdo one another and woo their constituencies with gifts. Politicians are busy distributing sugar, crackers, sweets, sarees as Deepavali gifts.
Local administration minister N.G. Paneerselvam gifted a packet of fire crackers and sweet box to the people of his constituency, Oulgaret. The gift packet contains pictures of NR congress ministers, Speaker V. Sabhapathy, R. Radhakrishnan MP and MLAs.
Not to be outdone, I.G. Veeraragu of DMK, also distributed packets of crackers and sweets to the people of Oulgaret. Sources said Veeraragu also distributed '1,000 for students of the constituency.
It was BJP state secretary R.V. Saminathan who started the “gift” campaigning. Saminathan who is likely to contest from Lawspet constituency distributed one kg of free sugar to each family in the area.
Nanda T. Saravanan, DMK rebel MLA of Muthialpet constituency who is to contest on AINRC ticket this election, also distributed a kg of sugar. Congress leader V.P. Sivakozhunth gifted a packet of sweets to people of the same constituency. “Always we are gifted with something by politicians, who are going to contest in the coming elections, during festival,” says Geetha of Lawspet constituency.
