VIT students excel at meet
CHENNAI: The VIT Chennai hosted an unusual talent event (IGNITE 2015: Division-1,District 82) semi-annual conference in which the best speakers were evaluated by another set of best speakers, who were in turn judged by a set of literature luminaries.
Division I of ‘Toastmasters International’ held their semi-annual conference in which ‘VIT Toastmasters’ was also a part.
Seven students from our college participated in this event along with other Toastmasters from various clubs of Division I, out of which two students won the third place in two events, said Richard TV, a 3rd year student and second runner-up in the division-level humorous speech contest. Jane Jedidah was the second runner-up in the division-level evaluation speech contest and 3rd year B.Tech student. “This content has given me the confidence to involve myself in mentorship. I would like to train others to become orators and public speakers,” she said. Jane participated in the evaluation content where speakers were judged by evaluators, who were in turn judged by an esteemed panel of judges.
‘Toastmasters International’ hold many speech contests every year, out of which, ‘VIT Toastmasters’ holds four contests in a year- humorous speech & evaluation speech contests in the fall semester, besides international speech and table topics contests in the winter semester.
The purpose of these contests is to put the skills we have learnt in ‘Toastmasters’ in a very competitive environment, so as to make ourselves better speakers. ‘Toastmasters VIT’ has also received an award for its immense progress in membership growth and educational achievements.
About 100-plus toastmasters from VIT participated which made this event a huge success in terms of participation. The competitors were from places like NIT-Tiruchy, IIT-Madras, TCS, Wipro and other community clubs.
Dr G Viswanathan, Founder and Chairman, VIT University said, “through this unique conference, our endeavor is to encourage public speaking and self-confidence in all our students. The evaluation content ensured that students were able to critique and understand each subject in depth. Through the humorous contest, we wanted to encourage vocational talent, self-confidence and again, public speaking. I am very happy to say that our students have done us proud”.
