Chennai: Finally, Chennaites are getting a real feel of the Northeast monsoon as the city recorded the heaviest rainfall this season on Sunday. That record too could be broken in the next 24 hours with the cyclonic storm (to be named Roanu) brewing in the Bay.
The city’s Nungambakkam weather station recorded 61 mm rainfall, while the suburb Avadi received the highest fall with 113 mm. The highest rainfall Chennai received in a day this season was 52 mm on November 1.
There has been a widespread rain across the city in extended spells all through the day bringing the temperatures below 25 degree Celsius.
The temperatures are predicted to plummet further with heavier spells of rains looming large.
M. Mohapatra, head of the regional specialized metrological centre (RSMC) for tropical cyclones over north Indian Ocean, confirmed that a depression has formed over southwest Bay of Bengal and would intensify into a deep depression and subsequently into a cyclonic storm.
Currently, it is centered about 450 km southeast of Chennai and cross Tamil Nadu coast between Karaikal and Chennai close to Puducherry around midnight on November 9 coinciding with Deepavali, he said. North coastal Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, would receive extremely heavy fall in the range of 250 mm or more on Tuesday.
Holiday for schools, colleges
In the wake of heavy rainfall and the impending cyclonic storm, a holiday has been declared on Monday for schools and colleges in three districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram, official sources said. Educational institutions will also remain closed in coastal districts of Villupuram and Cuddalore, besides Puducherry including in Karaikal.
