BJP Parliamentary Board meets to analyse Bihar debacle
New Delhi: Senior leaders of the BJP met in the national capital for the Parliamentary Board meeting, a day after facing a crushing defeat in Bihar polls. Prime Minister Narendra Modi who was considered the face of the party's election campaign in the state also attended the meeting where the party reviewed its performance in Bihar.
The board examined all the aspects and factors leading to the party's below par performance against the Nitish Kumar-led grand alliance.
The meeting of the party's top-decision making group - consists of 12 leaders- and is being chaired by party president Amit Shah. Other members of the group include Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, Venkaiah Naidu and Nitin Gadkari.
Before the meeting, Amit Shah met RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, whose quote remarks are being looked by a section of the party as one of the reasons for the loss in Bihar.
In the meeting, Shah is believed to have discussed Bihar results among other things.
Party sources added that it was customary for top leaders to meet the RSS chief whenever he spends time in the national capital but the meeting has assumed significance due to Bihar results.
The RSS chief's suggestion for a review of reservation was seized by the grand alliance leaders who used it to rally backward castes, alleging that BJP planned to weaken it.
After the loss, a few party leaders including veteran MP Hukumdeo Narayan Yadav has said it was a major reason for their defeat.
A meeting of the BJP's Parliamentary Board has been convened to analyse the results, its second successive defeat after the rout in Delhi assembly polls.
The mahagathbandhan won 178 seats in Bihar, a commanding two-third majority in the 243-member assembly. The Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies had to settle for a mere 58 seats.
